Horticulture at Derwen College Walford

The leaf it to Us team

Horticulture at Walford will have you outside in the fresh air whatever the weather!

On the horticulture pathway, you will learn skills through a mix of practical sessions outside, and theory sessions in the classroom.

The work on the horticulture pathway is physical. You will learn to use different types of tools and machinery to maintain garden beds and garden areas.

Skills

Throughout the course, you will learn how to identify different plants and what they need to grow and thrive.

You will learn about the different types of soil and their uses; along with how to weed and maintain garden beds, pot plants and create attractive displays.

You will need to be comfortable wearing protective clothing including steel toe-capped boots and protective clothing. Be prepared to put your hands in the soil and get dirty!

I like being a horticulture student because I like growing things and working outsideOliver

Work experience

The horticulture pathway at Walford offers internal work experience through its student-led garden maintenance business called ‘Leaf It To Us’.

Leaf It To Us takes the students through all sorts of projects – everything from landscaping and garden design, to maintaining local churchyards, schools, roundabout islands, and private gardens.

As a student at Walford, you will be able to take ownership of long-term horticulture projects. This will include learning to plan, budget and complete projects to a high standard and required time scale.
