Dame Agnes Hunt was a truly pioneering woman who left behind her an amazing legacy.
Just days after the RJAH hospital had transferred into the hands of the newly formed NHS, Dame Agnes died aged 81.
Dame Agnes Hunt led an extraordinary life. Despite having life-long disability in her hip, she travelled the world, trained as a nurse and opened a convalescent home for children from Shropshire Infirmary; and went on to found the RJAH Hospital and Derwen College.
Dame Agnes Hunt truly was a pioneering woman of the Victorian era.
In a memorial to her written shortly after her death it is said she “left an inspiration for others to carry out her vision”. That vision continues in the work Derwen College does today.
Agnes Hunt’s ashes are interred at All Saints’ Church in Baschurch, with her good friend Emily Goodford.
NB: Although her funeral Order of Service says she was born in 1867, her birth certificate confirms that Agnes Hunt was born in 1866.
