Last week, was Love Our College Week. Further education colleges from across the UK jumped at the chance to celebrate all the amazing work they do.
The campaign by the Association of Colleges took the opportunity to shout about students successes and brilliant student outcomes. We talked about how we partner with businesses to provide regular real-life work experience for students and supported interns.
The theme for the Love Our Colleges week was influencing, engaging and celebrating. So colleges took the opportunity to call on the present government, and next government, to better invest in Colleges.
We were part of a Love Our Colleges socials relay, where students were asked what changes they would like to see from a future government.
We asked some members of our Student Union Board why it is important to vote, what issues mattered to them, and what they would do if they were Prime Minister? There was a lot of support for Lauren’s suggestion for a four-day week!
Student Voice is very important to us at College. Our Student Union Board represent their peers at weekly meetings. Here, they regularly speak to our Senior Leadership team and governors.
Personal Development Coordinator Tabetha Crinson says that the College will be holding planned sessions in May. They will explain to students the importance of voting, and ensuring that they know how the process works. We also hope to hold a hustings event with local political representatives.
For most students, this will be their first opportunity to vote in a general election, and an important lesson in the British value of democracy.
