November 2020
Derwen College was commended in the AoC Beacon Awards for effective use of digital technology in further education. The commendation was for our suite of Support Work apps which include the CV Builder app, Premier Inn app and My Workplace app. These apps were developed with support from Starfish Labs and was part-funded by Marches LEP.
Derwen College was a finalist in the 20th Shropshire Chamber of Commerce Virtual Business Awards.
The College was recognised in the Digital Innovation category.
October 2020
Derwen College won the Innovation Award for Technology at the NASEN Awards 2020, which were held ‘virtually’.
The National Association for Special Educational Needs (NASEN) recognised the college’s achievements in creating a suite of apps which support students and young people with special educational into employment and independence.
July 2020
Derwen College has achieved the top Gold Standard award by Fair Train. The accolade recognises organisations which provide the highest standard of work-based learning.
This is the fourth time that the college has been awarded the Gold Standard.
Derwen College was shortlisted as a finalist in the West Midlands LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020 for our state-of-the-art Bradbury Hydrotherapy pool which opened last year.
The Bradbury Hydrotherapy Pool, which opened in September 2019, is on the shortlist for Best Public Service or Educational Building. The build was designed by Gareth Edwards of local architectural practice DPA Design and constructed by builders Jones Brothers. The hydrotherapy pool has benefited from generous donations from many community groups and leading grant makers including The Bradbury foundation, St James’s Place Charitable Foundation and Garfield Weston Foundation.
Derwen College won the Innovative Use of Technology Award in the first ever Natspec Awards. These awards celebrate excellence in the specialist further education sector. Derwen College won the award for continued work in developing ‘apps’ which support people with special educational needs and/or disability (SEND) into employment. We were also shortlisted for the Partnership Working category for our collaborations with national and community sport which enable students to partake in a wide variety of sports and leisure activities.
March 2020
Derwen Dance Crew won first prize in the over-16s SEN Street Crew category at Nexstar dance competition in Wolverhampton. Students Ben Moore-Hill won second place and Billie-Jo Bailey won fifth place in individual dances in mainstream categories. Watch a video of one of their fabulous performances here. Students Cerys George, James Ashworth and Sam Innes were nominated for Shropshire High Sheriff’s Outstanding Young Citizen Awards 2020.
