Number skills and creativity were a winning formula for Derwen College Number Day, a maths celebration inspired by National Numeracy Day.

Students from across all four campuses showcased the importance of number skills in everyday life, and had a great time doing it!

Entries were judged by College ‘numbers man’ Andrew Smith, our Director of Finance and Sustainability. After much deliberation, the winners were announced as Retail & Enterprise.

Their creative entry saw them make the number 18 in 18 different ways. They used different materials and equipment from around the Retail areas. They even used their bodies to make the shape of 18.

Functional Skills teacher Grace dropped into one of Retail’s Online Sales sessions to surprise students with the good news. The trophy was presented to students Byron, Ioan and CJ who accepted it on behalf of the whole department.

Maths is an important part of learning for our students. From day-to-day budgeting, working out sales and profit in Retail, measuring out plants in Horticulture, and tracking steps in Performing Arts, numeracy is an essential skill in every pathway as well as independence.

Fun maths facts from teacher Grace:

➖ There’s no Roman numeral for zero – the Romans didn’t recognise zero as a number at all!

✏️ The number four is the only number with the same number of letters as its value.

The letters in the word forty are in alphabetical order!

️ Between 0 and 1000, the only number that contains the letter ‘a’ is one thousand.

All odd numbers contain the letter ‘e’.

A huge well done to everyone who took part in this year’s Number Day – your creativity, enthusiasm, and numeracy skills really added up to something special!
