Thank you to the hard-working team of HSBC employees who swapped computer screens for spades during a recent volunteering day at Derwen College – making a real difference to our gardens and grounds.

The HSBC volunteers tackled weeds and overgrown foliage, including helping to clear a patch of nettles that had thrived during the recent wet weather. Their efforts have helped to maintain grounds and gardens for visitors to the college Marketplace to enjoy, as well as students and staff.

This isn’t the first time HSBC staff have volunteered for us, and their enthusiasm, teamwork, and willingness to take on any task make them a huge asset to the College.

HSBC have also bought and donated new gardening tools, which means we have quality tools for further volunteering opportunities, as well as for the our Horticulture students and staff to use.

Derwen College Community Fundraiser Megan Charman thanked the team, saying:

“We are incredibly grateful to the HSBC volunteers for giving up their time to support us. With a campus that spans 50 acres, help like this makes a huge difference to our groundskeeping team.”

“Volunteering plays an important part in college life at Derwen. Whether you’re part of a business or looking to volunteer as an individual, there’s a role for everyone,” Megan added. “From helping in the gardens, to supporting in our on-site charity shops or cafes, even a few hours a week can have a lasting impact.”
