There were screams, smiles and plenty of fake blood when students and staff from Smallbrook School in Shrewsbury visited Derwen College for a brilliantly gory special effects make-up workshop.

Our Performing Arts students got stuck in discovering how imagination and make-up skills can create convincing cuts and wounds for gruesome Halloween looks. The results were scarily realistic and had everyone in the spooky spirit!

The SFX (special effects) industry workshop was led by Terrie Cope, beauty therapy instructor at Smallbrook School, alongside her talented students. It gave learners from both settings a chance to connect, swap skills and explore a different side of the Performing Arts industry.

Terrie said her students were “buzzing” when they returned to school and couldn’t wait to tell their teachers about the day. She added: “Derwen College students were amazing, and I really hope they enjoyed the experience. I’m incredibly proud of our students too – they did a fantastic job sharing their skills and supporting everyone throughout the workshop. Thank you for giving us this opportunity.”

The workshop builds on an established partnership between Derwen College and Smallbrook School. Smallbrook students and staff have previously helped with prom hair and make-up and supported our shows. They will join us again for the Christmas show, taking the lead on stage hair and make-up.

Learning for Life students have also visited Smallbrook’s salon, where they received a warm welcome and enjoyed a pamper afternoon tea.

Performing Arts Lead Jessie Vaughan said: “It was fantastic to see our students connecting with learners from another setting, sharing skills, enjoying new experiences and discovering a different aspect of Performing Arts. The cuts and wounds looked incredible!

“A huge thank you to Terrie and the team. We’re already looking forward to working together again on our Christmas show.”
