This week, students have taken an active role in promoting road safety, participating in both national Road Safety Week and local initiatives.

Representatives from West Mercia Police visited our Gobowen campus to deliver important messages about road safety and speed awareness. They brought along a police speed camera van and motorcycle for students to explore. Special PCs Richard Walmsley and Mitchel Flavell, from West Mercia Police, were on hand to show students the vehicles and to talk about road safety.

Members of our Student Council also took to the road to support the Gobowen Community Speedwatch campaign. They joined Shropshire Councillor Craig Emery and Peter Leech, from the Community Speed Watch Team to monitor traffic speeds along Whittington Road. The busy road outside college is regularly used by students and clients crossing to the local bus stop and walking into Gobowen village. Derwen College has joined the campaign in response to concerns about the speed of vehicles on this road, which can make crossing difficult and impact students’ ability to travel independently.

As part of their Speedwatch activities, students worked alongside Speedwatch using a speed gun to record how fast vehicles were travelling in the 40mph zone, raising awareness of safe driving in the local area. They were joined by PC Mike Hogg, from Oswestry, Rural North Safer Neighbourhood Team, who stopped by to talk to the group and praised the students for taking part.

Road Safety Week is an annual nationwide campaign involving thousands of schools, colleges and communities, all working to promote safer roads for everyone. Derwen College was proud to play its part.
