Students from across college campuses went all out for this year’s Re-deck the Halls recycled Christmas decorations competition.
Many weeks’ worth of recycling and creativity saw students transform recycled cans, bottles, paper, cardboard, foil, wooden palettes and much more. Their reused materials created full-size Santa sleighs, a fireplace, wreaths, Nutcracker soldiers, snowmen, and Christmas trees.
The motto for many of the projects was ‘go big or big home!’ and the standard was truly off the scale. These creative masterpieces were crafted during Independent Living Skills (ILS) sessions, which most students enjoy on Wednesday mornings. Each house or campus was challenged to create a festive decoration using only recycled materials, encouraging both teamwork and sustainability.
Student reps brought their decorations to the Student Union to be where our panel of judges faced the tough task of picking winners in three categories. Judges were: Principal and CEO Meryl Green, Councillor Craig Emery, governor Liz Leigh, Student Council rep Jonathan Wiltshire, Director of Care & Independence Karen George, and Quality Manager (Care & Independence) Jude Cottrell.
After much deliberation, the winners were announced. They were:
- Glitter Sparkle – Kendall
- Inventive Elves – Telford campus
- The Grand Re-Decker – Kent House
All the decorations will remain on display in the Student Union for everyone to enjoy at the upcoming Christmas Disco.
Student Council rep Jonathan Wiltshire, who was one of the judges said: “These decorations are all very, very creative, showing weeks of hard work in ILS sessions. It’s been a very difficult decision with no favouritism or bias from me. All of the decorations will be on display, so everyone’s a winner!”
Every house received a festive prize and new recycling bins to help keep up the good work. Principal Meryl Green praised everyone’s hard work. She said: “What a fantastic effort. We could see how much work has gone into each and every decoration, and we were absolutely blown away.”
Congratulations to all our creative students for making this year’s Re-deck the Halls competition a sparkling success!
