Our newly elected Student Council, Principal Meryl Green and governors Liz Leigh and Dan Owen, took time out of their Student Council meeting to support Natspec’s #ThePowerOfSpecialistFE campaign.

Derwen College is proud to join the national ‘Power of Specialist FE’ campaign – led by Natspec, the membership body for specialist FE colleges – to highlight the vital role of specialist further education (FE) in supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

From 1–5 December, the college will showcase inspiring student journeys, including that of graduate Anna Redding.

“For anyone considering specialist further education, I’d say, take the chance. You never know what life will bring. I learnt to believe in myself and see what was possible.”

Anna’s journey has been so inspirational that she won Inspirational Adult Learner at the Shropshire Chamber Business Awards this year.

This quote from Performing Arts student Anna – who overcame the challenges of a brain injury at birth, resulting in learning and communication difficulties and short–term memory loss – captures the spirit of Derwen College. Anna embraced every opportunity, becoming a leading performer, mentor, and advocate for others with SEND. She now lives independently and won Adult Learner of the Year at the Shropshire Chamber Business Awards 2025.

During the campaign week, Derwen College will share student success stories such as Anna’s, as well as host a Lunch & Learn event for business partners who provide weekly work placements for students and supported interns.

Derwen College Principal & CEO Meryl Green said:

“We are incredibly proud to see our graduates leave Derwen College with new–found confidence, ready to take on the next stage of their lives. Time and again, students and their families tell us they have achieved more than they ever thought possible, thanks to the dedication of our specialist staff and the opportunities we provide for every learner to reach their full potential.

“Specialist FE colleges give young people the skills and independence to thrive, contribute to their communities, and pursue their ambitions. The Power of Specialist FE Awareness Week is a chance to show policymakers, employers and the public just how vital this provision is – not only for learners and their families, but for society as a whole.”

Clare Howard, Chief Executive at Natspec, said:

“Specialist FE is about unlocking potential and creating positive futures. Our colleges give young people, many with very complex needs, the skills, confidence and independence they need to succeed in their adult lives. They are critical to the government’s mission to create an inclusive education system, where no learner is left behind. Through The Power of Specialist FE awareness week, we are shining a light on this vital provision to ensure that it is recognised, valued and fully included in future policy making.”
