Students from our Horticulture pathway joined forces with learners from Lakelands Academy and North Shropshire College to create a stunning display of bedding plants in Oswestry’s Cae Glas Park.

They helped to plant a stunning display of pink, white and red begonias at the park as part of the annual Oswestry in Bloom initiative.

Derwen College Nursery and Production Manager Paul Moss said:

“We’ve been working together to create another stunning display in Cae Glas Park. The students have done a brilliant job working together on the project. The begonias should provide a burst of colour right through to October or even November.”

This hands-on project is just one of many community horticulture activities our students are involved in. As well as learning and gaining experience through our on-site Garden Centre and weekly external work placements, the team support local planting schemes. From hanging baskets and planters to larger scale park displays, they regularly travel to villages and towns including Gobowen, Llangollen and Cefn Mawr.

Thanks to Oswestry Town Council and Oswestry in Bloom for offering this opportunity of valuable work experience which promotes teamwork and community spirit and helps our students grow in confidence and skill.
