There was a buzz in our Bradbury Centre when we celebrated the launch of two brand-new books written and recorded by students – two budding authors with big imaginations!

Students Rhys and Ben, both aged 17, proudly unveiled their original stories which were created as part of their Functional Skills lessons in English and Digital Skills.

With support from the teaching team, the students wrote and recorded their own stories. These were then printed and made into audio versions to share with the college community.

Ben, a student on the Hospitality & Food pathway and is passionate about cartoon illustration. He wrote and illustrated a gripping fantasy tale titled Gods Vs Angels. Meanwhile, Rhys, a student on the Retail & Enterprise pathway, combined his love of gaming and fast cars in his story Grand Theft Florida.

Ben and Rhys both enjoyed their VIP days. Ben said: “I’ve enjoyed seeing my story brought to life. The book launch has made me feel like a real star author.” Rhys added: “I love computer games and can’t wait to play Grand Theft Auto when I’m 18. This story has my favourite things in it – cars and video games.”

The event welcomed students and staff, who were greeted by fellow students Ioan and Alice. Guests had the opportunity to meet the authors, hear their stories, and take home signed copies of the books.

The book launch was a proud moment for the authors and also demonstrated how Functional Skills are integrated into students’ timetabled sessions, supporting learning in English, maths and IT alongside vocational training.
