At Derwen College, we take a person-centred approach to safeguarding.
We act in the best interests of our students and keep them at the centre of decisions about their lives, working in partnership with families and other professionals.
We recognise our statutory duty to safeguard children and young people, and our practice reflects current legislation and guidance. All staff are trained to recognise and respond to concerns, share information appropriately, and take action in line with college procedures.

Reporting a Safeguarding Concern
Everyone has a responsibility to report concerns about the safety or welfare of a child, young person, or adult at risk.
In the first instance, all safeguarding concerns should be reported to the College Safeguarding Team – safeguarding@derwen.ac.uk. If this is not possible, or if the concern arises outside of college hours, concerns should be reported to the appropriate external safeguarding services.
In an emergency, call 999. For non-emergency police matters, call 101.
Safeguarding concerns can be reported to Shropshire Council First Point of Contact on 0345 678 9044 (Monday to Thursday, 9am–5pm, and Friday 9am–4pm).
For urgent adult safeguarding concerns outside of these hours, contact the Emergency Social Work Duty Team on 0345 678 9040.
Further information and support is available via the Shropshire Safeguarding Community Partnership website.
Additional Support
The NSPCC Helpline offers advice and support on 0808 800 5000 (Monday to Friday, 10am–4pm) or by email at help@nspcc.org.uk.
Concerns about online safety should be reported to the Safeguarding Team. They can also be reported directly to CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) via the CEOP website or through the Childline report tool.
