Students from Derwen College’s Performing Arts pathway showcased their skills, confidence and creativity this week in an exciting in-house dance competition.
Dancers from Derwen Dance Crew (DDC) wowed staff and fellow students with a range of energetic performances. The competition featured solo, duo and team routines across a mix of styles including Contemporary, Street and Theatrical dance.
The event was organised as a response to the College’s withdrawal from the Audacity Championships earlier this year. Determined not to miss the opportunity to perform, students and staff ran their own dance competition. Thanks to the generosity of the Audacity organisers, a selection of trophies were donated, making the event even more special.
The competition was judged by guest Adam Hartley, a student assistant at Identity School of Dance in Shrewsbury, alongside Derwen College Performing Arts and Dance teacher Opal Trevor. Both judges were incredibly impressed with the standard of performance and the passion on display.
Opal said: “The students have worked so hard on their routines and really brought their energy to the stage. Well done to everyone who took part and made our jobs as judges very difficult!”
The event was part of a busy summer term for DDC. The group will be performing as part of the ‘Remember When . . .’ charity concert on Thursday 20 June, joining Derwen College governor Mark Lord and his band Take Five at the Holroyd Community Theatre.
Then, on Friday 5 July, DDC will return to Shrewsbury town centre for a lively flashmob event alongside dancers from Identity School of Dance and the Shrewsbury Morris Dancers.
