Five Derwen College staff members will be getting their glad rags on this Friday (13 June) as they head to London for the glittering Stars of Social Care Awards, hosted by TV favourite Josie Gibson.

Kelli, Dan, Jade, Leanne and Lacey, from the college’s IT and care teams, will represent us after we were named a finalist in the Technology and Innovation category. The award recognises organisations using technology in practical and thoughtful ways to improve care and support.

We have been shortlisted for our use of assistive technology including overnight CLB acoustic monitoring in residences. The CLB system helps staff identify when a student may need support during the night, without relying on frequent and intrusive regular in-person bedroom checks. This means students can sleep with fewer interruptions, while staff can still respond quickly if there are signs of distress, unusual movement or a possible medical concern.

The system supports safety, privacy and dignity, while reducing unnecessary night-time checks. It is also linked to the college’s digital care records system, Nourish, helping staff record alerts and responses more efficiently and keep track of incidents, concerns and any follow-up action.

Natalie Bellis, Director of Care, People and Resources, said: “We are pleased to be shortlisted in the Technology and Innovation category at The Stars of Social Care Awards. This recognition reflects the work of our teams in using assistive technology in a way that is practical, person-centred and focused on improving everyday support for students. It is very much a collaboration between skilled care staff and assistive technology, working together to provide responsive, individualised support.”

The whole college will be cheering them on and keeping fingers crossed for a win. We can’t wait to hear all about the evening when they return – especially if they get to meet host Josie Gibson.
