Derwen College is proud to celebrate a culture of inclusion and independence.

We are delighted to share our recently published Ofsted report which highlights our culture of inclusion and success in helping learners with SEND grow in confidence and independence.

Inspectors recognised our inclusive ethos and the way learners are supported to build real-world skills in preparation for adulthood.

Derwen College met all expected standards under Ofsted’s new inspection framework, with Inclusion and Participation and Development graded Strong. The outcomes reflect our focus on creating opportunities for learners to thrive.

Inspectors visited the college’s campuses in Gobowen, Ludlow and Telford in March, with the report published in May. It highlights our inclusive approach, noting how staff identify learners’ needs quickly, reduce barriers to learning and create opportunities for students to participate fully in college life. Inspectors also recognised learners’ high attendance, positive attitudes, respectful behaviour and meaningful work-related experiences, which help prepare them for adulthood, employment and greater independence.

Zoe Wood, Director of Learning and Quality, said: “We are delighted with these outcomes. They reflect a huge team effort across the college and the unwavering commitment of staff who go above and beyond every day to support our learners.

“We are especially pleased to see Inclusion and Participation and Development recognised as areas of strength, because they are central to everything we do.

“We know the new Ofsted framework is extremely rigorous, with higher standards than previous frameworks, which makes this outcome even more significant. Most importantly, it reflects the progress our learners make in confidence, independence and preparation for adult life.”
