Our first full student meeting of the academic year brought students together to elect their new council leaders, enjoy a thought-provoking performance and celebrate achievements.
For many first-year students, it was their first experience of a full student meeting. They listened respectfully as all six candidates stood before their fellow students and delivered speeches about what they hoped to achieve as President or Deputy President. Every student was then given a vote to place in the ballot box, before Learner Voice Lead Tab Crinson counted the votes and announced the results.
After a closely fought election, Isla, Bungalows representative, was named President, while Joe, Cadbury Court representative, became Deputy President. Their pledges included championing more trips and activities, listening to students’ ideas and concerns, and making sure learners feel supported.
President Isla said: “I promise to listen to your ideas and concerns, and to campaign for more activities and trips for students.”
Deputy President Joe said: “I want to help make the college an even better place. I will bring student ideas to the council, help people organise events and trips, and be there for students when they are having a bad day. I want to be someone who is easy to talk to.”
While the votes were being counted, Derwen College’s DC Theatre group performed a piece about healthy relationships, exploring consent, taking relationships slowly, staying safe online and respecting boundaries. Students then put their learning to the test in a fun ‘red flag, green flag’ quiz, with most achieving full marks.
The meeting also recognised students’ enthusiasm during Freshers fortnight, when house points were awarded for joining activities and trying something new.
- Best House Spirit: Kent House, for taking part in the most activities
- Best Freshers Moment: Acorns, for trying rugby for the first time
- Overall House Champion: Bungalows
The meeting ended on a high with a video celebrating the students who joined Wrexham FC Disability Dragons at the Genuine Cup in Houston over the summer. Kyle and Jonathan were there to enjoy the applause, with Jonathan also recognised as the tournament’s top goal scorer.
The meeting was a real celebration of student voice and achievement, with students showing support and respect for one another throughout.
