Students are set to benefit from a generous £2,500 donation from members of The Lodge of St Oswald, Oswestry. The funds will support those taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award scheme.
Worshipful Master Peter Cherrington visited the College during the summer holidays to present the cheque to staff. He presented the giant cheque to DofE Coordinator Steve Evans, Marketing Manager Becky Bowyer and Fundraiser Bryony Wesson.
The Lodge originally raised £1,250 for Derwen Charity, with Peter kindly pledging to match the amount, bringing the total donation to £2,500. Peter, who is a former Oswestry Mayor, has previously attended the College’s inspirational Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards celebration. He said he felt strongly about supporting the charity and the opportunities it provides for young people.
The donation will help students with the costs of taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. This will give more students the opportunity to take part in Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards.
Bryony Wesson, Fundraiser at Derwen Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Peter and members of The Lodge of St Oswald for this generous donation. Their support will make a real difference to our students, helping more young people access the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and all the opportunities that come with it.”
Steve Evans, Sport and Leisure Coordinator at Derwen College, said: “Students gain so much from taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. It helps them build confidence, independence, teamwork and resilience, while giving them the chance to try new activities and develop practical skills.”
