Performing Arts students danced, signed, cheered and even tried their hand at conducting when international musicians from the Whittington Music Festival visited campus.
The group brought a rich mix of instruments and voices, including strings from viola to double bass, accordion, clarinet, and performances from a soprano and mezzo-soprano. We were also lucky to meet Artistic Director Sophia Rahman, who has worked with leading performers since 2020, and Louisa Gnafkis, an experienced pianist, dancer and teacher in the Alexander Technique.
Students were fully engaged in the interactive workshop, getting hands-on with both music and movement.
There were many highlights. Gershwin’s Walking the Dog for clarinet and strings, inspired plenty of imaginative acting as students became both dog walkers and dogs. As a Makaton-friendly college students also enjoyed getting involved through signing alongside the music.
To finish off they were also treated to an exclusive performances – the premiere of a new piece by composer Katherine Hunka.
Student Ben described the performance as “phenomenal and spectacular”.
The visit gave students a rare opportunity to experience world-class musicians up close, interact with them, and take part in a live music experience that was both meaningful and memorable.
Held at Derwen College, these workshops have become a valued annual fixture and are supported by the Hilton-Jones Charitable Trust, which has funded community activities across Shropshire and North Wales since 2004.
Aimee Ingham, teacher at Derwen College, said: “Our students love these sessions and the experience of being surrounded by live musicians. We’re so pleased to have this opportunity again, and we’re very grateful for such a memorable experience.”
The 2026 Whittington Music Festival includes internationally renowned performers such as violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason (who visited Derwen College) and his mother author Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason. Their Family Concert, on Saturday 16 May, brings together music and storytelling inspired by the animal world, alongside performances from young masterclass musicians and guest artists.
