As a student on our Hospitality and Housekeeping pathway you will initially take part in taught sessions to allow you time to enhance and develop your core skills and understanding.
The core skills taught are in housekeeping , bakery, customer service, basic catering as well as employability skills.
You will be learning in the Premier Inn Training Centre, Juniper Court, the Training Hub and training kitchen as well as the bakery and Food Centre Kitchen.
Where appropriate you can gain accreditation. From Personal Progress at Entry Level 1 to Food and Beverage Service at Level 1, qualifications include:
- Agored Cymru – Exploring Catering Skills
- Agored Cymru – Exploring Occupations
- City & Guilds in Hospitality: Entry into the Hospitality Industry
- City & Guilds NPTC Entry Level 2/3 in Skills for Working Life
- Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Maths and English Entry Level 1, 2 & 3, and Level 1
- City & Guilds Food Preparation and Cooking NVQ Entry Level 3 and Level 1
- City & Guilds Food and Beverage Service NVQ Entry Level 3 and Level 1
- Level 1 -Safe Hygiene and secure working environment in Hospitality
You will also develop your communication, social, independence, reading, writing and numeracy skills within sessions and in discrete maths and English sessions as appropriate to your needs.
Employability skills are embedded through all your sessions and you will also have discrete session ranging from time-keeping and the importance of uniform in the industry through to careers options and CV writing.
As your skills in hospitality and customer service continue to develop you will be able to undertake internal work experience placements and these placements give you the opportunity to experience work in a familiar environment before you move on to an external placements.
The Hospitality and Housekeeping pathway has strong links with local and national businesses and as a result is able to offer external work experience placements which will boost your confidence in work and social situations. We currently work with:

- Station cafe, Gobowen
- McDonalds, Chirk
To keep your skills top class you will experience real working environments, often working different shifts. You will have the opportunity to take part in different functions and events and take part in local and national competitions. In recent years our students have represented Derwen College at different competitions ranging from Table Laying and Afternoon Tea to Housekeeping. We have taken part in the Welsh International Culinary Championship and recently won 1 Gold and 1 Silver award at the Inclusive Skills Competitions.
It is important to ensure that your skills are at industry standard ready for work and to help ensure this our staff are industry trained. Staff and students regularly visit other restaurants and go to trade fairs to help ensure standards are kept up to date.
