| I visited Derwen College in Shropshire for their annual fete and enjoyed a wonderful and truly memorable afternoon. Derwen is a college for students with physical and mental disabilities between the ages of eighteen and twenty four. I honestly could not have been more impressed on my visit by the excellent and beautiful educational facilities, grounds, residential accommodation, farm shop, garden centre and restaurant – all run by the students and loyal, long serving staff. The whole ethos of the college is so inspiring and a joy to behold in our busy world.

| I felt I needed to contact you after attending J’s first year review at college.
The first things I had heard about J’s placement at Derwen College made me wonder if we had applied to the right specialist college and I began to worry about what I could do if the placement failed. I have to say that when I attended his first review, I was nothing short of astounded! The commitment and determination of staff at Derwen have shown, to ensure that J has settled and is involved in college life, is nothing short of amazing! His key worker has spent time really getting to know J and has tried strategies with him and if they haven’t worked he has tried something else. He has shown a phenomenal level of commitment to J and it has almost been like a personal challenge/goal for him to succeed with J. All staff at college have not been deterred or put off by how J behaved in the early days and they have tried to think out of the box. They have worked so closely with parents and at the point of the review [meeting], J was even ready to begin staying a night or two. I just could not believe the change that had occurred in such a short period of time. I am so grateful to Derwen staff for making J’s placement a success! Careers Adviser, May 2016 |

| J is such an incredible young man with a heart of gold. It has been truly an honour being part of his journey, watching him grow and mature into the person he is today. I wish I could say that was down to me but it isn’t. It’s because of all you guys, you’re an incredible team of people that make magical things happen. Never stop doing what you do, there will always be ‘Js’ out there that will benefit from all of your skills, love and care that you offer.

| I was kindly invited to attend the 20th anniversary of Severn Dee Travel yesterday and as you will know Severn Dee Travel operates the ticket office within Gobowen Railway Station.
On arrival it was great to see your students from Derwen College providing the catering. I must say the standard and quality of not only the selection of food that was on offer but also the service provided by your students was the best I have experienced in a long while and is a real credit to your college.
