Derwen’s Nurses are experienced in delivering care to students with learning disabilities.
As a student at Derwen, nurses will support your wellbeing needs with a range of services including:
- Nursing Assessment.
- Urgent Care.
- Wellbeing Clinics.
- Easy-read health information.
- Advice on diet and nutrition.
- Desensitisation support around health.
- Contraception advice.
- Epilepsy support and planning.
- Diabetes care and planning.
- Nursing care plans – long term/ongoing conditions.
- Talking therapies and problem solving.
All students at Derwen have the opportunity, and are encouraged to register with the College’s local GP practice. Having a local practice ensures ease of access to services and ability to manage long-term illnesses. Alternatively, you may wish to remain with your current GP practice at home.
Care staff and vocational staff at Derwen are trained First Aiders. College staff also undertake Administering Medication training, where their role requires it.
Unless you are able to self-medicate, your care staff will administer your medication. However, you can have a self-medication assessment while you are at Derwen. It might be that you self-medicate with supervision. You will have your own safe where you store both your medication and your Medication Administration Record (MAR) chart.
Some students remain with their home dentist, optician or audiologist. Others choose to transfer to a specialist local to College.
A member of the care team will accompany you to local medical appointments, unless you have asked to attend independently. You can speak to a nurse to prepare for your medical appointment. You can discuss, with the nurse, who you are likely to meet, the sort of questions you might be asked etc. The nurse will add the outcome of this appointment to your health record.
Our Registered Learning Disability Nurses are Kelly Griffiths and Phoebe Irvine-Shuter.
Kelly Griffiths, RNLD Level 1
Phoebe Irvine-Shuter, RNLD
Each of the students has a link nurse (based on their residence):
Nurses are on duty Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm throughout term-time.
