What else will your programme include?

Alongside your chosen pathway or programme. we will work with you to develop an individualised programme, which will include:

  • Functional Skills (English, maths and ICT)
  • Independence Skills Development
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

As part of your wraparound independence programme, you will learn about budgeting for meals, go shopping for your food and have the opportunity to cook and learn about healthy choices.

You will be supported while you explore the local and wider community, develop road safety and travel skills and explore aspects of personal and social development and citizenship.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills comprises of English, maths and ICT and is delivered and embedded in work, independence and wellbeing and through small, discrete groups.  It is a big part of everyday life.

Some students will also have the opportunity to undertake accreditation in English and maths at an appropriate level.  Students take part in fun activities throughout the year including World Book Day, National Poetry Day, Maths Week, National Numeracy Day, Safer Internet Day and national competitions.

Independence

At Derwen College, we believe independence skills are best learnt through doing. Students are supported to complete daily living tasks as they naturally occur in day-to-day life in their residence or base. These daily life skills include:

  • Shopping
  • Cooking
  • Making beds
  • Laundry
  • Personal hygiene routines
  • Travel training
  • Using money
  • Hoovering
  • Dusting
  • Using the dishwasher and much more.

These are all things you would do in your own home, preparing you to potentially live in supported or independent living environments once your time at College is over.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Through our extensive PSHE programme, we will support you to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding you need to lead a confident, healthy and independent life. Topics you will learn about include:

  • online activity
  • relationships
  • rights
  • healthy lifestyles
  • moving on after college

You will also have the chance to explore current and trending topics, helping you to be safe, happy, and knowledgeable and well prepared for work and life.
