Learn with Derwen: Signing for Santa workshop
November 21 at 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm£10.00
Derwen College is running a Signing for Santa workshop again this year. Santas and elves completing the workshop will have no difficulty understanding what children want this Christmas.
Signing for Santa started in 2016 when Betsy, 3, who has Down’s syndrome and impaired hearing and vision had a “magical” surprise when a Father Christmas on board the Weardale Polar Express started to communicate with her using Makaton. Her mother, Kay Scott, from Halifax in West Yorkshire, said: “Immediately she was put at ease, because she understood – it just made her first experience of Santa magical.”
Bob Thompson, Father Christmas on the train, learned sign language during his time as a social worker. He said: “It gave Betsy an opportunity to tell Santa what she wanted for Christmas, it empowered her to talk on her own outside a school or home environment.”
Makaton is a language programme designed to support spoken language with signs and symbols. During the workshop you will learn Christmas Makaton signs and symbols to help you communicate with children with learning difficulties and disabilities.
The two hour Signing for Santa workshop takes place at Oswestry Library on Thursday 21st November 2019 from 2.30-4.30pm. It teaches essential Makaton signs and symbols to make the grotto experience magical for youngsters of all abilities. The cost per elf, Father Christmas or human is £10.
