The Inclusive Skills West Midlands competition event, hosted by Derwen College, took place on Thursday 16th June 2016.
There were 24 learners competing within 4 competitions including Catering, Entry Level 2, Table Laying, Entry 1, Table Laying, Entry 3 and ICT, Entry Level 2.
The Catering and ICT competitions were regional heats with the winners now possibly having the opportunity to compete in the national final in November 2016 at The Skills Show in the NEC Birmingham.
The Inclusive Skills competitions were developed in order that competitions are more inclusive to students with learning disabilities and difficulties by increasing the number and range of competitions on offer. Derwen College has pioneered the development of the Inclusive Skills Competitions in partnership with other colleges, representing Inclusive Skills at a national level and Derwen took part in the national Inclusive Skills Competitions at the Skills Show 2015.
“We had a great day of competitions here at Derwen and would like to say a huge thank you to the judges who came and gave their time to be part of these competitions. Our judges included Darcie Powell and Karen Dale from Premier Inn, Verity Bowen from the Boat House in Ellesmere, Emilio from Prezzo in Oswestry, Sian Bowles from Microsoft and Paul Clarke from Micro Plus. This is a great opportunity for the competitors to show off their skills and we are pleased to have held the competitions here at Derwen” said Laura Griffiths, Projects and Partnerships Co-ordinator at Derwen College.
The winners of the competitions were:
- Henry Hicks Derwen College in Table Laying, Entry Level 1
- Rob Cooke Derwen College in Table Laying, Entry Level 3
- Shaun Bratt Hereward College in ICT, Entry Level 2
