Guidelines for Visitors
Derwen College extends a warm welcome to all visitors. To ensure that your visit is safe and comfortable and to protect the wellbeing of our students and staff, please be aware of the following points:
Parking – Visitors can park in any of the numerous car parks around the campus which also include visitor parking spaces. Please ensure that vehicles are parked within designated areas and do not obstruct fire exits, access points, other vehicles or pedestrian crossings.
Please be aware that there is a 5mph speed limit on all roads within campus. Zebra crossings are marked on the main thoroughfare and additional caution should be exercised on the approaches to these.
Visitors are people who require access to other areas of the College other than those identified as commercial/public areas.If visiting College between 9am and 5pm please sign in the Visitor’s Book at Reception.
A Visitor’s badge will be issued to you. This badge which must be worn at all times, using the red lanyard supplied, during your visit and must be returned when signing out of College.
College is a place of study, a place of work and home to many people. We would be grateful if you could respect this during your time on campus.
We expect all staff and students to treat visitors with respect and courtesy. Please reciprocate this expectation.
Visitors outside of normal working hours
People visiting College outside of the hours listed above, including personal visitors, family and friends, should check in at the Medical Centre, before visiting student accommodation.
A Visitor’s badge will be issued which must be worn at all times during your visit. Please sign out in the Visitor’s Book before leaving the campus.
Visitors to Residences
All visitors must follow the check in procedure as outlined above.
Please respect the privacy of students in their residences and be aware that visitors are not permitted to enter rooms of other students without the express permission of the student.
Taking students off campus
Family and friends should inform the staff if they intend to take students off campus.
Visitors to our commercial/public areas
There are specific areas of the College that are generally open to the public and members of the public may access these areas without the requirement for a visitor’s badge through “signing in” in the normal way:
• Young’s Farm Shop
• The Orangery Restaurant
• Garden Centre, plant sales and joinery workshop
• Betty’s Coffee Shop
• Tiffins
• Woodland Walk
• The Gallery
• Walled Garden
• Bowling Green
• Walk-through of College campus
All of these are open to the public seven days per week, except Bank Holidays. Students work in these areas as part of their vocational training courses gaining valuable employment skills in meeting and serving members of the public.
A Duty Officer is on campus between 7.45am and 12 midnight and will approach and check any member of the public on the College campus who is not wearing a Visitor’s badge.
Staff ID Badges
College support staff can be identified by a photo-ID badge which also details their name and job title.
Contractors
Contractors attending the campus to carry out repairs/maintenance work must report to and sign in at Reception between 9am and 5pm or to the Medical Centre outside of these hours. Visitor’s badges will be issued as above. Contractors who report directly to the Workshop’s Office will be directed to Reception to follow the signing in procedure.
Builders
Builders working on long term projects are issued with Builder’s badges from the site foreman who keeps a register of builders on site. This register is checked weekly by the Director or the Assistant Principal, Student Services.
Fire Procedures
Fire procedures are displayed in all College departments. Please familiarise yourself with these and follow the instructions of College staff in the event of a fire alarm.
Smoking
College has a Smoke-Free Policy which enforces a smoking ban in all enclosed and substantially enclosed premises.
Smoking is permitted outside of buildings but not within 4 metres (13ft) of building entrances.
These arrangements apply to all staff, students and trainees, customers and visitors.
Dogs
Dogs are permitted on the campus but must remain on a lead and be supervised at all times. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs at all times. Dogs should not be exercised on the Sports Pitch.
