The Orangery Restaurant

The Orangery Restaurant is situated within Derwen College and provides students from the Hospitality and Housekeeping department with the chance to learn food service, money handling and communication skills through their interaction with the customers.

The Orangery’s setting within a Grade II listed Georgian country house provides a unique dining experience popular with the general public and its style has been carefully set up so that students are able to access all aspects of service.  The Orangery is open daily.  Its lunch menu offers a range of daily specials and a salad bar.  Breakfast, coffee and afternoon tea are also available during the day.  The dishes are predominantly home-made on-site with good use made of local produce.  Students from the college’s Catering Department help to prepare the main meal of the day.

The Orangery works in accordance with the college’s healthy eating policy and, where possible, uses healthier ingredients in its dishes.  This has recently led to achievement of the Gold Healthy Eating Award granted by Shropshire Council which was presented to the Orangery staff and students by the Oswestry Borough Mayor.

In addition, the Orangery works hard to meet a wide range of customer needs.  The restaurant facilities are located on the ground floor of the house and a ramp and electric door provide full wheelchair access.  A range of blackboards and a large plasma screen are used to assist those with visual impairments in reading the menu specials.  Symbols are used on the specials boards to indicate allergy advice and healthy options.
