The great and the good of learning providers honoured at national awards: Derwen College win an award for their commitment to learner voice.
Learning providers, college practitioners and senior managers were honoured for their services as the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) announced its national Leading the Learner Voice award winners for 2010.
The great and the good amongst the country’s leading learning professionals gathered at the Thistle, Marble Arch for the award ceremony, now in its fourth year.
Derwen College were awarded representative organisation of the year, which recognises organisations who provide as many possible opportunities for learner engagement through democratic processes. The judges were impressed by the way the college embraces learners’ views and offers opportunities for learners to have direct involvement in assessing and shaping their own learning experience.
This ensures a culture whereby the needs of the learners are paramount and central to all decision-making within College.
Jodie Hughes, who is the President of the college’s NUS, was shortlisted in the category of Leading Learner of the Year. Jodie felt very proud to have been shortlisted and was inspired by the event. She is now considering how she can develop her president role further.
Student, Neil Stallard, who is a student council representative said “ I think every single person associated with Derwen College should be extremely proud and honoured that we have been able to receive such a prestigious award”.
LSIS chair Dame Ruth Silver hailed the event as one of the “highlights of the year” while LSIS chief executive David Collins said praised all those who had been nominated.
“This thoroughly enjoyable evening recognised the excellence of the work being carried out in colleges and by providers. “The Learner Voice is certainly coming across loud and clear and making a significant contribution to the development of the sector.
“There are some great stories coming out from up and down the country and some great winners!”
