Personal Development
Personal Development is a key priority in all aspects of college life. Great emphasis is placed on developing personal, social and health education; also building confidence, assertiveness and self esteem.
The programme is modular, supporting and tracking progression of negotiated learning goals for each student. Modules include Relationship Skills, e-Safety, Drugs Awareness, Action Planning and Review, Citizenship and Peer Mentoring.
During their first term, students set up their e-portfolios which they will maintain throughout their programme. Here they reflect upon and record their achievements using a choice of technology such as photographs, video clips and mp4 players.
Personal Development groups take part in discussion and role play relating to current and pertinent topics. They are encouraged to form opinions, make choices and decisions and to think about the consequences of their actions. They learn to build relationships with others based on mutual respect and consent. E-Safety sessions enable students to have fun whilst keeping safe online; they also learn to deal proactively with issues regarding cyber-bullying.
All modules encourage social responsibility, the understanding of rights and responsibilities and the democratic process. Students have the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament and Welsh Assembly and to take part in local elections.
There is an active Student Council, which this year has affiliated with the National Union of Students. All representatives of the NUS meet at a weekly forum to discuss ideas which encourages Learner Voice. They consider College-wide topics to take to Council meetings and arrange fundraising events.
Oak Radio is the College’s new radio station. Students have the opportunity to put together a weekly pod-cast containing information and news from around the campus. They have the chance to use professional sound recording equipment and act as producers and presenters.
During their final year, students are encouraged to become peer mentors, using their own experiences and empathy to support newer students at College. Prior to leaving, students complete their personal statements, e-portfolios and update their CVs. They are supported to manage their transition from College to the community; there is the opportunity to take part in video conferencing with future providers and their learners to assist them in this process.
