Choices
The Choices programme provides curriculum enrichment activities which vary from term to term and provide an extensive choice of opportunities to participate. Each term there are about twenty options on offer. During their three years at the College, all students are supported by their Personal Tutors to opt for a selection of the activities in order to experience as wide a range of learning and growing experiences as possible.
Students who enjoy creative work may choose Art or Ceramics, or they may elect to join one of the drama groups that include Singing and Dance. The Pen Friend group supports students who are keen on keeping in touch with friends and family. Those interested in exploring and understanding the outdoors and nature can join the Our World group, while students who like to discuss news and events choose Current Affairs. There is a selection of craft groups, while the Detective Club and the Quiz Club encourage thinking and reasoning. The Makaton group practises communicating through signing and symbols. Physical wellbeing is encouraged by the Keep Fit and Healthy Eating groups. Those who are interested in languages and other cultures may opt for French or Welsh.
The range of activities on offer is intended to contribute to learning in terms of encouraging discovery and exploration of new issues. The activities are conducted in such a way that they are informal, relaxed and encourage the students to participate. Programme design is broad and is linked loosely to the core curriculum so that learning, though possibly incidental and unplanned, is positive and contributes to the students’ acquisition of further knowledge.
Through the Choices programme, the students benefit from a wider experience of informal learning opportunities.
