Basic Skills
An essential element of each individual learning programme is the provision of opportunities for the development of communication, literacy and numeracy skills. Communication skills include any form of interaction such as speaking and listening (including signing); literacy covers reading and writing; numeracy includes using numbers in a wide range of contexts, such as handling data and measuring, shape and space, telling the time and money handling.
Each learner is assessed using the Basic Skills Agency diagnostic assessment tool to identify which skills need developing. Following this assessment, each learner is provided with a Literacy, Numeracy and Communication (LNC) goals. These goals highlights which areas are in need of development and objectives are negotiated with the learner each term to meet their individual needs. Basic Skills teachers then work alongside vocational and independent living skills staff, ensuring that teaching and learning of these skills are embedded throughout the College Curriculum experience.
Progress in literacy, numeracy and communication is regularly reviewed with the learner and progress is monitored throughout their time at Derwen College to assess and record distance travelled in enhancing their skills.
Through the National Curriculum Frameworks for Pre-Entry and Adult Learners, each learner is working towards nationally recognised standards. Accredited awards can be gained through the Open College Network for literacy, numeracy and communication. These support and extend the vocational awards programmes. The Department also provides accreditation for work experience and this assists the development of literacy, numeracy and communication in the context of the work ethos.
Learners can undertake courses at local colleges of further education. This assists in preparing them for further options when they leave the College and provides opportunities to meet and work with people from a wider background and range of abilities.
