Basic Skills

The individual learning programme for each student provides opportunities for the development of communication, literacy and numeracy skills. The recently introduced Functional Skills refer to these as English and Mathematics.  English includes communication skills in any form of interaction such as speaking and listening (including signing), reading and writing; mathematics includes using number in a wide range of contexts, such as handling data, measuring, shape and space, telling the time and money handling.

Each student is assessed to identify which skills need development.  This assessment determines the appropriate English, mathematics and communication goals.  These goals highlight which areas are in need of development and objectives are negotiated with the students each term to meet their individual needs. Basic Skills teachers then work alongside vocational and Independent Living Skills staff, ensuring that teaching and learning of these skills are embedded throughout the College Curriculum experience.

Discrete groups are also used to address specific areas that benefit learners, such as the Reading Programme and Advanced Mathematics.

Through the National Curriculum Frameworks for Pre-Entry and Adult Learners, each student is working towards nationally recognised standards. Accredited awards can be gained through the Open College Network for English, mathematics and communication.  These support and extend the vocational awards programmes.

Progress in English, mathematics and communication is regularly reviewed with the learner and progress is monitored throughout their time at Derwen College to assess and record distance travelled in enhancing their skills.
